When Google set out to create Chrome, the company wanted its browser to have a minimalist interface that wouldn’t distract from the content. Why bring up Chrome in a review about Markdown Edit? Because these two applications share the same design philosophy. Both have a minimalist and good-looking interface that helps you focus on what’s important: your work, getting things done as fast as possible.

Speaking about that, this is where I tell you that Markdown Edit is a markdown editor (not a word processor) for Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Its main purpose is to help you produce text documents that can be transformed into webpages and documents. You could also use it to edit existing text files, produce articles, and write small papers.

Markdown Edit is available as an installer and as a portable version. As developer Mike Ward explained, both versions are identical. And both versions require Microsoft’s .NET Framework to run.

Markdown Edit’s interface is divided in two: a dark panel to the left where you can input your text, and a light panel to the right that shows how your text will look like. In the upper right hand corner there are buttons to open a new document, open an existing document, save the document you’re working on, spell check your text, word wrap your text, and access the Settings menu.

As mentioned at the start of this article, Markdown Edit comes with all the features you need to get things done as fast as possible. Here’s a closer look at the features this editor puts at your fingertips: modern interface that has a minimalistic look; press F1 to bring up a long list of keyboard shortcuts; word count; spell checker; word wrap; snippets so you can easily insert words or phrases; user templates; save as PDF, DOC, or HTML; accurate syntax highlighting; and more.

Markdown Edit is free software. If you like this markdown editor, show your support and make a donation.

Markdown Edit has it all: a good-looking, minimalist interface that doesn’t get in the way, nice set of features that you can easily access, and it is completely free (donations are welcome).
